Platoon review

Platoon begins with the protagonist Chris(Charlie Sheen) arriving in Vietnam. The year is 1968 and Chris is there to reinforce a platoon that has suffered a lot of casualties. There really is no fucking around and the beginning is straight to the point. Guns are fired within minutes. The platoon has a few characters that the film is based around. Besides Chris there are Sgt. Elias, Ssgt. Barnes, Sgt. O'Neill and Lt. Wolfe. LT is a weak officer, so Barnes is pretty much in charge. Barnes is a ruthless killer who will do anything to get his will done. O'Neill is one of Barnes' minions and Elias is a man of high moral standards, so he and Barnes quarrel often during the movie. Chris is a kind of a spectator in between, though he and Elias are friends.

The platoon sees a lot of action during the movie and they lose a lot of men. Majority of the milieu is jungle because the guys are on the move all the time, or setting up an ambush or something. The focal point of the film is where they come across a village and they want to revenge their dead friend. Innocent people are killed, majority of them by Sgt. Barnes, but Elias gets there in time and the whole village doesn't end up in the body count. The platoon is divided into half, those who are with Elias and those who are with Barnes.

Towards the end of the movie Elias gets killed by Barnes and everything is just falling apart. Chris gets wounded in a grand final battle and then gets shipped back home.

The overall atmposphere is dark, but very vivid. You kinda feel like you're there and everything seems pretty realistic. This is the kind of film that really stirs up emotions, especially in the scene where destroy the village. I haven't got any complaints really, it's a great movie. The charactes are great, the scenery, music, editing...everything! Platoon goes to the same category with Apocalypse Now with it's dark and psychological feel, and that could be what they were aiming for with this film. All in all, a great classic.

Entertainment value: Excellent
You should watch this if: you're into exciting thrillers/deep & emotional action films.
Score: 9/10

P.S. This film should really be watched, not ran in the backround when having a party or something.

Miniatures

If you've ever played a table top game like Warhammer or a classic rpg like Dungeons & Dragons, you've seen a gaming miniature or two. At the moment I'm sculpting a mini of my own out of green stuff(a kind of epoxy paste made by Citadel). I'm gonna post a report of the sculpting process once the mini is finished, with pics of course!

I'll try to get at least one film review done over the weekend, and after the films I'll post the miniature report. And dont worry, there'll be posts about video games too.

Upcoming film reviews

I've decided to get a "classic movie reviews" -series going. One film that I'm definitely going to review is "Apocalypse Now"(Redux version). "The Platoon" would be awesome to review aswell. Maybe even as a double package because they are both starred by a Sheen. Martin Sheen in "Apocalypse Now" and Charlie Sheen(Martin's son) in "The Platoon". And both of those films portray the Vietnam war in their own ways. Do you guys have any suggestions? Feel free to drop in a film you think I should watch and review! All genres are welcome.

Remember Jesse "The Body" Ventura?

This bad ass mofo is best know from his appearence in the Arnold Schwarzenegger starred movie, "Predator". It premiered in 1987 and later that year Ventura appeared in another Schwarzenegger film, "The Running Man". Ventura has done several films after first turning to acting from wrestling in 1987. Some people might not know that he actually was a UDT-member/Navy Seal. Here's a clip about what he's doing now.

127 Hours - a film review

So basically there's this guy called Aron Ralston(James Franco) who goes biking/hiking to canyon land. He listenes to some crappy music, falls off his bike, takes a lot of pictures and films himself. The man is psychologically funny because he talks to himself a lot, even in the beginning of the movie where he hasn't gotten into trouble yet.

On the first day of the trip he meets two girls who are lost, guides them around a bit and then they part ways. Shortly after that the protagonist gets stuck inside a crack in the surface. His hand is crushed by a multi-tonne piece of rock.Long story short, he goes through some kind of a mental trip during the following few days and cuts is own arm off with a crappy-ass chinese-made camping knife. Then he goes home.

All in all, its an ok film but it could've been done better. First of all the plot is boring. I know it's based on true events but still, come on. ~2 hours of one character, one milieu, one voice... you get the idea. All i got from the film was an urge to hiking and a dizzy feeling from the scene where he cuts his own arm off. Now THAT'S grotesque. Excellent performance by James Franco. That's pretty much what saves the film from total disaster.

Entertainment value: Good/OK
You should watch it if: you're into hiking, 16-45 years old and like slower paced films.
Score: 7/10

New Conan The Barbarian -film coming out this year

Yeah, thats right. It's gonna be totally awesome or a total and utter pile of shit. Obviously Arnold isn't going to be in it, so they got some guy called Jason Momoa to play Conan. I'm not impressed, but it's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the two original films.
